Women Entrepreneurs Shine at SPBD Market Day

WOMEN micro-entrepreneurs from across Fiji gathered in Suva last week to celebrate SPBD’s (South Pacific Business Development) annual Market Day.

More than 50 women showcased their small businesses, including sewing, handicrafts, and food products.

The event was a celebration of women’s hard work and achievements through SPBD’s support over the years.

“This is just a sample of the amazing women we work with,” said SPBD Founder Gregory Casagrande. “We’re here to celebrate their success, and we hope the public will come out and support them.”

SPBD is also marking its 15th year in Fiji. Across the region, including Samoa, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, SPBD is now 25 years old. The organisation works in more than 450 villages in Fiji, offering weekly training, savings accounts, and small business loans to help women grow their income and skills.

SPBD hosted its annual Businesswoman of the Year awards to honour some of its most successful members.

Katalaini Lavetivakarua, 56, from Drekenavou Centre, has been part of SPBD for five years. “I run a sewing business, and SPBD helped me get three industrial sewing machines,” she said. “I want to encourage other women to step out of their comfort zones and use their talents to start a business.”

Selina Tinai, 54, from Waituirua Centre in Drobuta Village, added, “Women are eager to learn, and through SPBD, we learn together. I’m grateful for the support.”

As part of the event, Sho Hongo from Social Innovation Fiji also announced a new job platform called HARUKKY. “This new platform will help Fijians find jobs more easily using AI,” he said. “SPBD is now our newest partner.”

SPBD Market Day continues to highlight the power of women entrepreneurs and their role in building stronger communities in Fiji.
