SPBD Opens New HQ

MICROFINANCE network South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) officially opened its new headquarters in downtown Suva yesterday afternoon – a move said to be a testament to the resilience, ambition and entrepreneurial spirit of the people.

In his official address, chief guest Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica acknowledged the institution’s significant milestone in the journey of economic empowerment, and said it symbolised progress, collaboration and a shared vision of financial security for all Fijians, particularly those who had been underserved by traditional banking institutions.

“SPBD stands out as a beacon of hope for women’s economic empowerment,” Mr Kamikamica said.

“Since its inception, SPBD has been instrumental in driving financial inclusion, particularly for women. By providing micro-loans, business training, and financial education, SPBD has empowered thousands of women to start and expand their businesses, improve their living standards, and contribute to their communities.”

He said financial independence was key to breaking the cycle of poverty and when women accessed financial resources, the benefits extended beyond their immediate families.

“Studies have shown that women reinvest up to 90 percent of their income into their families and communities, ensuring better health, education, and overall well-being for future generations.

“SPBD’s mission aligns seamlessly with our Government’s vision of creating an inclusive economy where no one is left behind.”

SPBD Fiji general manager Elrico Munoz said: “Today, as we stand at the threshold of this charming colonial house, we embrace a new chapter, a symbol of progress and an embodiment of our commitment.”

He said the new location was designed to make SPBD visible and accessible, and also make members feel at home.

He acknowledged the Fiji Development Bank (FDB) for continued funding pivotal to enabling its operations “and make a tangible impact in the lives of many”.

SPBD will mark its 15th anniversary in October later this year.
